Below is my 1st Letter from the Editor I wrote for JOURNEY magazine. We've....grown some since then!
Letter from the editor
God shots.
Better than any shot of liquor you’ll ever have.
1 year clean and the editor of the newest recovery magazine?
Bartender! I’ll take a double!
Welcome to ‘It’s all in the JOURNEY’, a magazine that is written by, and for, the recovery community. This first issue, with 10,000 copies printed, is aimed at our home group; the state of Florida. Next will be New York/New Jersey, then we’re setting our sights on California.
This magazine was developed to help, inform & entertain the recovery community, but, the real driving force that brought It’s all in the JOURNEY into being?
This magazine came about to fulfill a promise I made to my daughter last Father’s day.
I promised her that I would live a life to make her proud.
It was the first visit I’d had with her clean & sober in 21 years.
It was at her graveside.
Joy got entangled in the footrest of her grandfather’s recliner chair, and the weight of her body closed it around her neck, strangling her.
She spent nine months in a vegetative state before I took it upon myself to decide that she would be better off dead, than to exist like she was for the next 30-40 years.
That was in June 1985. My first day without a drink or drug after that was in May 2006.
Detox diary; night tech’s log, will be about my fight to get to, and stay in, sobriety. It will run the gauntlet from the anger, the guilt, the thinking ‘Nobody can understand my pain; To the realization that my pain was not greater than everybody else’s. Just a different kind. Everybody’s pain is the worst, to them (That was huge).
To the God shots. The incredible, turn around to see if anybody else caught that, God shots.
“What comes out of my hand is what’s inside my head,
Because then it’s over, forgotten, I’ve put it to bed.”
What’s inside my head will come out of my hand, here.
Kyle S. will be doing the steps in his column, ‘One step at a time’ A comedian gets serious…well, kinda. New comers be sure to read his column; he is the kind of sponsor you strive for.
And, Mother Henry (riiiiight?) will be telling you about places to go/things to do in recovery. Being a concert promoter, biker, & 19 yrs. clean, his column, ‘What’s your agenda’ is a must read before going out for the week-end.
And Prose’s Posse, is YOUR column. Write to us. Tell us your story, your poems, your thoughts. We will publish a selection each issue.
“What comes out of my hand, is what’s inside of my head.”
Body, mind & spirit will high light a different topic, by a different author each month.
Johnny, our graphics guy who puts this magazine together, is yelling at me that I’m out of room, so...
‘It’s all in the JOURNEY’
Let’s start this one together.
