Telling strangers about your sobriety.

I don't know why this is bothering me so much.

I'm laying in bed going through this whisper app where people anonymously tell each other their secrets. Out of the last 14 posts I've seen, about 5 of them about how people are "____ months clean from cutting."

1. Is cutting yourself REALLY an addiction?

*I swear I have the most addictive personality ever and I used to cut. Never was I addcited to it. I did it because I wanted the attention.

2. As a recovering addict, I feel like your sobriety is not something you profess to random strangers. I don't know many (if any at all) recovering addicts that go around on the street and say "Hey, I'm 17 months sober today!" Getting sober is something we do for ourselves, not something we do to get attention for.

And to make it worse, the only posts I've seen about someone being clean - involves cutting. I kind of feel like an asshole for this, but I kind of feel like saying "I'm 4 months clean from cutting." or whatever - is a way to get attention. Their no longer getting the attention they got when they were cutting, so they get the attention some other way.

Thoughts?
